Confirmation
In the rite of Confirmation, a baptized Christian makes "a mature commitment to Christ, and receive[s] strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a bishop." (BCP, 857)
Confirmation allows for those who have been baptized to express a desire to live as an adult Christian within the tradition of the Episcopal Church and world-wide Anglican Communion. It also allows for those who were baptized as infants, to claim the promises made on their behalf for themselves.
Confirmations are periodically scheduled based on when the bishop will be visiting the parish. But time is also taken before the bishops visit in order to prepare, examine, and explore the Christian way of life.
Reception into the Episcopal Church
For those who have already been baptized and confirmed in another Christian tradition but wish to be formally recognized as members of the Episcopal Church, the bishop can formally receive them as part of the confirmation service. A similar period of preparation and study is undertaken beforehand.
Reaffirmation of the Baptismal Vows
For those who have already been baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Church but who wish to renew those promises made can do so as part of the confirmation service as well.
