Unction, or Anointing of the Sick
"Unction is the rite of of anointing the sick with oil, or the laying on of hands, by which God's grace is given for the healing of spirit, mind, and body." (BCP, 859)
Following the example of the Book of James, we anoint and pray for the sick, asking that God release them from anything that prevents them from wholeness whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. Holy oil blessed by the priest is used for anointing as oil has ancient associations with healing.
Clergy and members of the church are available to visit the sick, whether in the hospital, nursing home, or at home in order to pray, to offer anointing, and to bring Communion to those unable to join us in person on Sundays.
A Service of Public Healing
This service is a Holy Eucharist held at the church with a special intention towards those seeking God's healing presence in their lives. There are prayers for the healing of the world and for the health of individuals and an opportunity for those present to be anointed with holy oil and prayed over by the priest.
