Confession
"Reconciliation of a Penitent, or Penance, is the rite in which those who repent of their sins may confess them to God in the presence of a priest, and receive the assurance of pardon and the grace of absolution." (BCP, 859)
All Christians are called to a life of repentance, to confess their sins to God and to ask for forgiveness. A General Confession is made before the Eucharist so that all have an opportunity to examine their conscience before receiving Communion and so that the community as a whole can ask for forgiveness from their collective sins.
But often, it is helpful to be more specific, to name out loud those sins that weigh on us to a wise and confidential priest who can pronounce God's absolution and offer spiritual counsel and advice. It is a powerful and healing means of receiving God's grace directly applied to a person's life.
